The Cookie Diet - Review by a Registered Dietitian

There are at least three companies who sell various versions of The Cookie Diet:  Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet (by a physician from Miami, Florida who has been marketing this cookie program since the 1970's); The Smart For Life Cookie Diet (which boasts organic cookie ingredients, and also has both a medically supervised and a 'home' version plan) and the Hollywood Cookie Diet, so named because of all the celebrities who supposedly followed this diet.  The latter has the most nutritious "cookie" ingredients which include 10% of the daily value for iron in each cookie, and 20% of the daily value for Calcium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.

The way the diet works is you have one "cookie" at each meal time and snack time to total four to six cookies a day (depending on your plan) for a daily calorie intake from the cookies of 500 calories.  Then you balance out the day with a healthy dinner consisting of lean protein and vegetables.  Your own healthy meal can have over 500 calories, and your daily intake will still be less than 1200 calories, a level at which most anyone can lose weight rather rapidly (about two pounds each week).

The idea of meal replacement dieting has been around for a long time.  Some are in the form of shakes, some frozen pre-prepared dinners, some offer bars in different flavors.  The diet works in several ways:

1) You are taking in a low calorie level so you burn more energy than you eat and the result is weight loss.

2) You do not have to make any decisions about what to eat: the cookie, meal, shake or bar is simply there for you to open and eat.  This is helpful for many people who do not have the time, energy, or willpower to plan every meal and will end up eating the first thing that sounds good to them (drive through, vending machine, buffet--you get the picture) on many instances, thus failing at their weight loss attempts.

3) The diet works partly because of taste fatigue--when you are presented with the same food day after day you start losing your taste and your desire to eat.  This makes dieting and weight loss a little easier because if you stay on the regimen, you are a little less interested in eating.

The diet can also tempt people to stray from the plan because it becomes boring.  And this, like any other diet, will only work for as long as you can stay on it!

Nutritionally, Dr. Siegal's cookies are not very good for you.  They have 2% or less of the daily value for vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron.  Lucky for you, Dr. Siegal's company also sells a vitamin and mineral supplement to assure you remain well-nourished!

And what about the cost of these cookie plans?  Most of these cookie diets ship the products to you (you pay for the shipping) at a pricey per week.  I have a recommendation for a healthier and more cost-effective plan.

First, have a breakfast bar and fresh fruit for breakfast every day (most breakfast bars are fortified with vitamins and minerals and many include a few grams of fiber).

For lunch, choose a diet frozen meal.  There are hundreds of varieties among several brands to choose.  This way you can enjoy a delectable lunch every day whether you like Asian cooking or pasta dishes, turkey or chicken, sauteed vegetables or  old-fashioned green beans.  For an afternoon snack a low fat yogurt in one of a hundred flavors will nourish you with calcium and riboflavin and keep you satisfied until dinner time.  Then it's time for your own "sensible meal".

This plan with real food will help you meet the guidelines and recommendations for vitamins, minerals, balance, and variety.  You can eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains and dairy products.  The calories: about the same as the cookie diet (approximately 500 before your healthy dinner); the cost--about less than the cookie diet... and that doesn't include your "no shipping" savings.

Nutrisystem vs. MediFast - A Comparison of Two Popular Diet Plans, Nutrisystem & MediFast

You may have decided that using a diet meal replacement plan or diet food plan would be the easiest way for you to lose weight. However, there are so many plans available; you may not know which program would work the best for you. In this article I will compare two very popular diet food, meal replacement plans Nutrisystem and MediFast. These diet plans may seem similar, although once you read about each plan, you will find they are very different.

Nutrisystem Overview:

Nutrisystem offers prepackaged, pre-portioned diet meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks. You are advised to add fresh vegetables, fruits, salads to lunch, and dinner meals. The meals are low calorie, yet nutritionally sound with the added fresh fruit and vegetables. The diet meals are based on low glycemic, good carbs, with the right amount of protein and fiber that your body needs for increased fat and calorie burning.

The Nutrisystem program also offers a free weight loss community website where you can get free diet counseling, weight loss tips and community support in your weight loss endeavors.

Nutrisystem advises if you eat their prepackaged diet meals and follow their plan, you can potentially lose 1 to 3 pounds a week.

MediFast Overview:

MediFast offers prepackaged diet meal replacement foods including shakes, soups, bars, pudding, drinks and cereals. Their name basically sums up how their plan works; you are "fasting" most of the day. Their most popular program is the 5 and 1 diet program where you eat 5 MediFast meals a day and 1 low calorie, low fat meal you cook and prepare yourself. Their plan is designed to be calorie deficient (between 800 - 1000 calories a day), thereby allowing your body to use fat for energy.

MediFast also offers a free weight loss community website where you can get diet support, weight loss tips, diet recipes and more.

MediFast advises if you follow their 5 in 1 diet program and use their diet meal replacements you can potentially lose up to 20 pounds in a month.

The Cost:

Nutrisystem costs about a day, a week and 8 a month plus shipping, although if you choose their auto-ship program, you will get a discount and a free week of diet meals and free shipping.

MediFast costs about a day, a week or 5 a month if you order one of their 4-week variety packages.

Both Nutrisystem and MediFast offer a money back guarantee minus shipping if you choose to return unopened packages of the diet meals within 30 days.

The Difficulty:

Nutrisystem: Using the Nutrisystem diet meals for weight loss should be an easy transition since you will be eating regular meals and snacks. You may find the calorie reduction in the meals leave you hungry or not satisfied. The convenience of the prepackaged, very little preparation of the diet meals should make the program easier to follow. Staying on the diet for a long term may become difficult because of the lower calorie intake makes you feel unsatisfied. The taste of the foods (which will be discussed next) may also be hard to enjoy.

MediFast: Transitioning to the MediFast meal replacement plan may be difficult at first since you will be replacing most of your meals with a meal replacement shake, soup or bar. Sometimes a drastic change in your eating habits can be a bonus because it may give you a greater feeling of dieting control. Staying on the diet for a long term may be very difficult because of the monotony of replacing 5 meals a day with the MediFast foods and the taste of the foods.

The Taste:

Nutrisystem: There are reports and reviews throughout the internet regarding the taste of Nutrisystem's diet meals. Some people rave about the taste (although these "raves" may be biased if the person is promoting the program), and many people absolutely hate the taste of the diet meals. On average, many Nutrisystem dieters report they have favorite diet meals, while some suffer through the taste of the meals because of the convenience of the program and the weight loss achieved. Recently, Nutrisystem listened to their customers and introduced many new "better tasting" diet meals that may be more palatable.

MediFast: There are also mixed reviews on the taste of MediFast meal replacements. On average, many MediFast dieters report that the tastes of the meal replacement foods are "okay," not overly tasty, yet good enough to stay on the diet program to achieve weight loss goals.

Conclusion:

Nutrisystem diet meal plan is a convenient, diet food program that offers a membership site with diet counseling and diet tips. The transition to using their diet foods should not be too difficult since it is recommended to eat 5 diet meals a day supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables. Since the diet meals should be less calories than you normally eat, and designed to increase your body's ability to burn fat, you can expect to lose 1 to 3 pounds a week. The diet plan may work best for people who may need a support group for weight loss, yet are too busy to shop for and prepare diet meals, and don't have time to continually analyze food calories and fat grams.

MediFast diet meal replacement program is also a convenient weight loss program that offers a community forum, diet support and tips. The transition to using their diet meal replacements 5 times a day may be difficult. Yet, it may also help many dieters resolve to stay on the diet plan since the results may be realized fast with up to 20 pounds lost in the first month. The diet program may work best for people who need to lose a significant amount of weight. In addition, it can also work well for those who desire convenient meal replacements, yet also wish to prepare a fresh meal once a day.

Anti-Fungal Diet - What to Eat on an Anti-Fungal Diet and What to Avoid

Have you tried doing a yeast free diet before? Would you like to know what to eat on an anti-fungal diet and what to avoid? If so then today I will present to you some excellent information on how to effectively eliminate a chronic candida overgrowth through a diet which will starve out the yeast and allow your health to return to normal once more.

So what do I eat on an anti-fungal diet?

Veggies: Lots of vegetables that are low in starch, so leafy greens work as well as greens such as celery. Carrots and beets because of their high sugar content are best avoided, later on in the diet after several weeks they can be re-introduced in moderation.

Whole Grains: Quinoa, Millet, Amaranth, (Brown rice & sprouted wheat in moderation if tolerated)

Lean Meat: Organic Chicken, Organic Turkey, Wild Fish ie. Salmon. Vegetarian diets have been found to be even more effective when combating candida although for many people they find themselves unable to completely give up meat, in these instances a moderate amount of the above meats are allowed per week.

Fruits: Lemons, Limes, (Grapefruit, Berries, Green Apples in moderation after the initial phases of the diet)

What to avoid on the anti-fungal diet?

Everything processed, especially processed foods which are high in starch or have sugar.

Wheat & processed grains including breads, pastries, cookies and any grain based processed foods.

Avoid vinegar as this increases yeast activity in the body as does alcohol which also must be avoided.

Bottom line, avoid all sugar and starchy foods. A diet high in fiber to clear the bowels is ideal, with a majority of this fiber coming from vegetables and some from the allowed whole grains. This diet requires personal attention and work, however like all true methods of healing the body it is the only way to achieve lasting relief, drugs & anti-fungals will only do so much. In addition to the diet though you must also be focused upon eliminating the root causes which have created this condition to begin with, very often these are not obvious.

Foods To Consider For An Acid Reflux Diet

This is some general advice if you are going to be following an acid reflux diet. Eating large meals and eating just before going to bed are not recommended when you are on an acid reflux diet. You are also supposed to avoid fat and/or spicy foods. All of these habits can lead to the increased production of stomach acid that may enter and cause damage to the esophagus. This is particularly true if the closing muscles do not work as they should. The consequence is that you end up with permanent heartburn.

There are many foods to consider when you are speaking about an acid reflux diet. There are foods that should be avoided, foods that can be consumed in moderation and foods that one can definitely have. The first section of the acid reflux diet will deal with the foods that are to be avoided:

Fruit - Lemon, orange juice, lemonade, cranberry juice, tomato and grapefruit juice

Vegetables - Mashed potatoes, raw onion and French fries

Meat - Ground beef or chuck, chicken nuggets, marbled sirloin, buffalo wings

Dairy - Milk shake, sour cream, ice cream and regular cottage cheese

Grains - Spaghetti with sauce and macaroni and cheese

Beverages - Wine, liquor, all coffee whether decaffeinated or regular, all tea whether decaffeinated or regular

Fats/oils - creamy salad dressings, oil and vinegar salad dressing

Sweets/desserts - Chocolate, butter cookies, high-fat, brownies, doughnut, potato chips that are fried and corn chips

The next list of foods are considered to be safe foods if you are on an acid reflux diet:

Fruit - fresh apple, dried apple, banana, apple juice, pineapple, papaya( these help to neutralize stomach acid)

Vegetables - carrots, baked potato, broccoli, cabbage, peas, green beans

Meat - extra-lean ground beef, skinless chicken breast, London Broil steak, fish with no added fat, egg whites, egg substitutes

Dairy - feta or goat cheese, fat-free sour cream, fat-free cream cheese, low-fat soy cheese

Grains - Corn bread, multi-grain or white bread, graham crackers, bran or oatmeal cereal, pretzels, brown or white rice, rice cakes

Beverages - Mineral water

Fats/oils - low-fat salad dressings

Sweets/desserts - fat-free cookies, red licorice, jelly beans, baked potato chips

The following foods are to be consumed in moderation when you are following an acid reflux diet:

Fruit - low-acid orange juice, peach, apple cider, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, dried cranberries, grapes

Vegetables - onion that is cooked, garlic, leeks, scallions, sauerkraut

Meat - lean ground beef, scrambled eggs in butter, chicken salad, fried eggs, tuna salad, fried fish, beef or pork hot dogs, ham

Dairy - Yogurt, frozen yogurt, 2% or skim milk, low-fat cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese

Grains - Granola cereal, garlic bread, muffin

Beverages - Non-alcoholic wine, non-alcoholic beer, cola, beer, root beer

Fats/oils - Ketchup

Sweets/desserts - low-fat cookie

This is by no means a comprehensive list of the foods that you can consume and avoid on an acid reflux diet but it is a start. When you find that your reflux disease is somewhat under control, then perhaps you can slowly add a food from the forbidden list to see how you will react to it. If it makes your acid reflux worse, then you know to avoid that food for good.
